When it comes to Covid19, I feel like our country is split in two ways. Some feel as if the coronavirus is being blown out of proportion and will not get bad in the US.  While others believe it’s just a matter of time and has already started preparing. According to the latest news from the CDC, “It’s not so much a question of IF this will happen anymore, but rather more a question of exactly when”

This morning, I was listening to a popular radio station update their listeners with the latest on covid19.  She mentioned the spike of confirmed cases in Italy and South Korea then she proceeded to talk about how covid19 is now in 30 countries but not to worry because it wouldn’t become a problem here in the US. Before I comment on that statement, I would like to start off by saying that I am not a paranoid person nor do I panic easily.

As someone who remains positive in most situations, I believe that statement was not very accurate and we are still going to see the effects of covid19 one way or another. We could start seeing a drastic increase in confirmed cases that are close to home, negative effects on our economy including stock market crashing, lack of food, supplies or medical care. These are just a few examples.

We can not depend on mainstream media or the government to tell us the truth about covid19. They want to prevent people from panicking and being afraid. We have to pay close attention to how the government is acting. Actions speak louder than words. If it’s not a big deal, why did the FBI just spend $40,000 on facemask and hand sanitizers?

Coronavirus in Italy

In Northern Italy just over the past few days, there are 12 towns now on lockdown, over 200 cases confirmed and the grocery stores are already out of food. As soon as they started seeing numbers doubling overnight, they realized how serious this virus is and they started to panic because they were not prepared. Just take a look at this letter from a lady in Italy right now explaining the situation as she lives it.

“Its total panic”. There are pictures like this all over the internet showing how fast stores ran out of food after Italy had only 200 confirmed cases. I bet 2 weeks ago they would have never imagined being in that situation.

Coronavirus in China

This is the scenario all over the world. China even said it in the beginning and you see where they are now. The article below is a great example of this. It was written by an anonymous guest writer in China. It was published recently by HuffPost.

https://www.huffpost.com/entry/coronavirus-covid19-life-china-precautions_n_5e4eaa73c5b6df1e8be3d4d7

It talks about an American couple who lives in China currently. They have made China their home. They are sharing what their life is like in isolation and how it has affected them.

The most interesting part about this whole article is when the writer was talking about their plans for the Chinese New Year. Just before the holiday, there was little talk about coronavirus and they noticed a few people wearing masks but for the most part, life was normal. As just a matter of days went by, they started seeing more and more people wearing masks and fewer people on the streets.

We thought it was silly ― we knew that masks, while important for a doctor working directly with a sick person, were not necessary for every person in the city. And as far as we could tell, the virus was like a cold: only dangerous to people who were already sick.

Annonimouse In China

Then came the school closings and lockdowns. Anyways, you get my point. To this couple, they probably thought the same thing. It’s not a big deal and it won’t happen to us. But it did and fast!

My point of sharing both of these stories is not to wait and see what happens because it will be too late by then.

What if they are right?

What if the “paranoid” is right? What if we will see covid19 spread throughout the US? The way things are going now, that is likely to happen. That is what I preparing for at least. As a parent, I feel it is my obligation to be more on the “overreacting” side of covid19. One of the worst things I could think of happening would be my children sick or hungry and I am unprepared to help them. We are their parents, providers, and protectors. It’s our job to be prepared for situations like this.

At the end of the day, the outcome is in your hands. I heard it said perfectly this morning “You will NOT be rescued, YOUR health and survival are entirely in your hands, get lots of information and make good decisions”- Clif High

People will laugh and look at you as if you are being paranoid or “crazy”. WHO CARES! You are informed and ready just in case. I guarantee this, those same people will be at your front door if something does go down because they know who is prepared.

If we don’t see an outbreak here in the US, GREAT! That is what we are hoping and praying for. It’s not going to hurt to have a few extra weeks worth of groceries and medicine. I would rather be safe than sorry.

It has nothing to do with a lack of faith either.  I am a Christian and I am very confident in my relationship with God. I’m not fearful, I am simply being prepared. There is a difference. I want you to be prepared as well.

What am I stocking up on?

Preparing is easier and cheaper than you think. If you are on a budget, stock up over a period of time. For the next week or so, anytime you do to the store grab a few items at a time. The longer you wait, the less time you will be able to do this. There is going to be a food shortage so start ASAP.

I personally look for Bogos at Publix, Kroger clearance isle or any store will have weekly deals that are marked down. You will need enough food to feed your family for at least 2 weeks.

Think of things that you might be unable to get from the store just in case they run out of food as we saw in Italy. Think about services that could be disrupted such as water service or electricity. You might want to keep a few extra supplies just in case a loved one or neighbor is in need.

Get Non-Perishable Items For Covid19 like:

  • Dry cereal, granola or dried fruit
  • Peanut butter and jelly
  • Nuts and trail mix
  • Crackers
  • Gallons of water
  • Baby formula and/or jarred baby food (if needed)
  • Food for your pets (if needed)

Emergency Items And Necessities Needed For Covid19 Preparation:

  • Disposable diapers
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • Flashlight
  • Portable radio
  • Extra batteries
  • Manual can opener
  • Plastic garbage bags
  • Toothpaste, soap and hair wash
  • Toilet paper
  • Entertainment–games, playing cards, books, movies, etc.
  • Extra cash

Medical/Health Supplies Needed For Covid19 Preparation:

  • Prescribed medication and/or supplies
  • Mask and gloves
  • Goggles (can be swimming goggles)
  • Plenty of hand sanitizer
  • Fever reducer and pain reliever
  • Cough syrup
  • Thermometer
  • Vitamins such as antioxidants, C60, NMN, Vitamin C, elderberry,
  • Electrolytes like Gatorade and Pedialyte (for small children)

Again, most of these items above come from China so they might be scarce or difficult to get as the days go by. In fact, about 80% of medications come from China. Since we are not accepting things from China yet, what we have in the US is all we have in the US.

We have a detailed list of items recommended here in our FAQ so make sure you check that out. is

Let’s Talk About Face Mask For A Minute…

Face masks are literally out of stock or sold in limited quantities. Again, these are items that come from China.

A regular surgical mask will not help protect you from the virus. You need an N95 respirator mask. Here is a great article that explains more.

Look at this picture taken in South Korea just yesterday! Hundreds of people standing in lines waiting to purchase a mask.

If you can not get a mask, something is always better than nothing. There are some really creative alternatives online. DIY face masks are also an option!

Ok, I will jump off my soapbox now… I’m not trying to guilt anyone into anything at all. I am just so passionate about this from the parental perspective. How you handle this and prepare (or not) is totally up to you. Do what is necessary and what works for your family.
