What is Resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a natural plant compound (called polyphenols) that is found in the skins of red and purple grapes, as well as berries, peanuts, and pistachios. They act like antioxidants which means they protect the body against things that can put you at higher risk for certain diseases and conditions disease. One of the most popular ways we consume resveratrol is by drinking red wine. In fact, that’s why red wine is said to have so many benefits if you drink one glass each night. I’m not saying for you to do that but what I am suggesting is to find a way to get this much-needed plant compound to optimize your health.

Heart Health

When it comes to leading causes of deaths, heart-related issues are number one. In fact, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1 out of every 3 people in the US will die from this in 2020.

Since resveratrol contains a very high antioxidant potential, it is great for heart health. Eating foods high in this plant compound or even taking good resveratrol supplements daily might help prevent damage to blood vessels, lowers LDL cholesterol, prevent blood clots, and could lower your chance of heart disease.

Longevity

There is research constantly being done that suggests that resveratrol can add years to your life. In this study (done on mammals) specifically about healthspan increase and disease prevention in mammals by resveratrol, the conclusion suggests that resveratrol can prevent and even reverse the aging process and can extend lifespan as well as healthspan.

In other studies done on flies, resveratrol was able to successfully extend the lifespan of yeast, and worms, because of how it protects against certain age-related diseases.

Theses are very promising studies that give humans a glimpse at what resveratrol could do for us.

Brain Health

Several studies on how resveratrol affects our brain have suggested that it’s possible for it to help slow down an age-related cognitive decline such as Alzheimer’s disease or dementia.

The effects resveratrol has on brain health comes from the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties it contains. This combination can also keep beta-amyloid from forming and can protect brain cells from being damaged.

Resveratrol Supplements

The reason vitamin supplements are so important for some is that they allow us to easily consume nutrients that will optimize our health. Our bodies do not naturally make most vitamins and minerals but we need them to maintain our healthiest life possible.

You can get these vitamins and minerals from the foods you eat. In order to do this, you need to consistently eat a well-balanced diet and look for ways to intentionally add them to your meals. However, if you are not able to fit these important nutrients into your diet, taking vitamin supplements is necessary.

When looking for any supplements, you want to make sure it comes from a trusted source as well as contains quality ingredients.

Products that do not contain fillers, artificial ingredients, and harmful preservatives are what you want to look for. You also want to make sure it your supplements are made in an “FDA inspected facility that maintains strict cGMP Standards”.

In general, vitamins are safe for people to use, though you should always check with your doctor before beginning a new supplement. Some vitamins can be dangerous for people with weakened immune systems, which can occur due to long-term use of corticosteroids, an HIV/AIDS infection or organ transplants.

You may also need to avoid some supplements if you have an artificial heart valve; in rare cases, these bacteria can infect your heart muscle, and patients with artificial valves have an increased risk of this complication.
